Dear Mr. Hemingway,
Reading slumps are legit. Seems crazy to have a problem such as this with a TBR list longer than my own life’s expectancy. Even with a bookshelf overflowing with unread books and a library just a quick two minute drive away, I sometimes find myself struggling to find a book to suit my mood. Everyone has their own unique strategy to overcome this malady, but for me, a suspense or thriller usually remedies the problem. After getting a bit discouraged this time around, I decided to abandon all books in progress and pick up Christina Mcdonald’s latest book, Behind Every Lie. I didn’t know much going into this book other than it was labeled “unputdownable” from some trusted resources. I took a swing and landed a homerun. Here’s the scoop…..
With most thrillers, it is safe to say that they are difficult to summarize or chat about without leaking major spoilers. Let me give you the setup and some of my overall thoughts of Behind Every Lie to get you started. Eva Hansen woke up after being struck by lightning, to find out that her mother (Kat) had been murdered, and she is a suspect. Crazy, right? Eva can’t remember anything from that night. Once she leaves the hospital, she is determined to piece together what happened the night of her mom’s murder. She leaves her fiance behind to explore her late mother’s past in England (where she was from). As she uncovers the skeletons in her mom’s dusty closet, memories and dreams start popping up that Eva can’t wrap her head around. Is what she is remembering true? Are her wild thoughts and paranoia a side effect of the lightning OR because she is guilty of killing her mother? This my friend is where I paused and went, 😮🤔!! Let the adventure begin!
I started reading Behind Every Lie on Saturday night (Yes, a fabulous glass of red wine and a book is my idea of a “good time”). I read for an hour then went to sleep. I woke up Sunday morning and replaced my wine with a bottomless mug of coffee and read this book until I finished it (just before lunch). That my friends, is a sign of a good book. I could end there, but I won’t. McDonald’s domestic style thriller is a compelling and rip roaring engaging read. She kept me guessing and second guessing myself as to who killed Kat throughout the ENTIRE book. The chapters are short and sweet, moving this plot forward at a rapid pace. Behind Every Lie is narrated by Eva and her mother in dual timelines. It is swarming with secrets, lies, and family drama that I so desire. As Eva and her mom’s timelines get closer to one another, the truth starts to unravel. Thrilling, emotional and even a bit thought provoking, Behind Every Lie will leave you picking up your jaw from the floor.
Have fun on this wild ride!
Your Biggest Fan,
P.S. In order to wake up with a bottomless mug of coffee and read until lunchtime is 100% due to my husband 🥰🥰🥰. He eagerly took our three boys out for the day, leaving me with peace and quiet (swoooon). Though I did finish this book successfully, casualties still occurred. Laundry was shamelessly abandoned, dishes were left dirty and distressed in the sink, the fridge remained empty and neglected and beds continued on their unmade journey. Everything has a cost. You can’t have it all, and I am ok with that 😍.
P.P.S. According to National Geographic, there is a 1 in 700,000 chance of being struck by lightning in one year in the United States. There is a 1 in 3,000 chance of being struck by lightning in your lifetime.
